BROKERING NEWS

The discussion on 'Radia tapes' in Varthakalkku Pinnil on 22/11/2010 was interesting. When R Ajithkumar and MG Radhakrishnan were on Studio, Nikesh Kumar, John Brittas, BRP Bhaskar and Gopikrishnan were online on Phone. When Gopi went all out against the 'Cheer Girls' of National Media, Nikesh was protective on Barkha. The discussion stood out as major News Channels have some how sidelined the issue.

New Look & Feel Varthakalkku Pinnil

On this day of 'Kerala Piravi', Varthakalkku Pinnil is getting a new look. With newer graphics, back drops and animations, we are looking forward to present a refreshing look and feel to the programme. It is our continous endeavour to match the expectations of a critical and media literate audience of Kerala. We are always open to bouquets and brickbats. Looking forward for your valuable suggestions.

The Article in The Hindu

Varthakalkku Pinnil’, a live current affairs programme on Doordarshan Malayalam, focusses on an issue that is making headlines. The programme, which was launched on May 26, 2009, is completing a year and is still going strong. K. Ampady, Deputy Director and Head of News, Doordarshan Malayalam talks to Friday Review about the show. Excerpts...
Peek behind the scenes
We started ‘Varthakalkku Pinnil' because we wanted to compete with channels that offer news 24/7. We started by increasing the number of news bulletins on the channel. Then we started thinking about a programme that did a daily analysis on an event of the day. That is how ‘Varthakalkku Pinnil' began. It tries to bring in an objective take on the main news of the day. When there is no breaking news that merits a discussion, we discuss current issues. For instance, during the Copenhagen summit we had participants at Copenhagen sharing their views on the topic.
We did the same during the Nuclear Security Summit. A panel of experts is invited to participate in the programme and lend the programme authenticity. Our anchors, Arun, Lal and Anil Bhasker, act as the facilitators. We then take a thread, a line of thought from the broad topic and discuss it.
Challenging takes
Hosting the show means the anchors are continuously walking on the razor's edge. They have to be careful as to what is being said on the show as we want it to be as partisan free as possible. That is why when the show has, say, a political topic being discussed, we invite representatives from two to three political parties. If a person is unable to join the show due to unforeseen circumstances, we ensure the anchor says so on the show and we try to do a live phone-in conversation with the person concerned or rope in someone else to step into his shoes.
Same topic, same faces
As chances of the same topic being discussed on other channels are strong and the risk of the same people being invited on the show equally strong, we have made an exhaustive list of possible people as guests for our show.
Also unlike other channels where they discuss more than one topic on the show, we stick to one. That way, we can go deep into the topic and give the viewers a broader and clearer picture of the issue.
Pick of the kitty
My favourite would be the one where we discussed the responsibility of the media in delivering news. We had representatives from various channels talking about this on our programme. It was a rather heated discussion and the anchor played referee.
Vision
We launched ‘Varthakalkku Pinnil' to test the waters. We wanted to see how well the programme would do against other such shows on other channels. Till date, we have been receiving a positive feedback. People seem to like the fact that we analyse news objectively. It has also given us the reason to believe that we will be able to start a 24-hour regional news channel.

Near Collission Avoided!

The Stormy debate on Nazir...
In the entire history of 'Behind the News' programme, this was a 'shaky' episode. The participants, were nearly at blows on the screen! It all began when one of the participants mentioned that he doesnt consider 'Thadinatevida Nazeer' as a big threat. The response described him as a former naxalite! and the diatribe went on! And after the discussion, the real word power began, with all *!*^...*@.....The programme Assistants tried their best to avoid a literal showdown...finally both were sent in different cars to their respective destinations.

Discussion on Kannur

The discussion on fresh spate of violence in Kannur was really hot. MI Shanvas and Panniyan Ravindtan in Studio and P Jayarajan and K Surendran over the Phone, really set the discussion ablaze. Its for the audience to judge the show, but we at DD were really nervous about the out come of such a sensitive Live debate!

On The First Anniversary

'Varthakalkku Pinnil' is an experiment by some of us in Doordarshan, Thiruvananthapuram. It was a search to find whether an objective analysis of events, with in a 'defined platform of neutrality' will succeed in the 'newsy' environment of Kerala. The name was suggested by Baiju Chandran. As the name suggested, the show explored the 'unseen' realms of publicised news. As a Public Service broadcaster, we had to take the risk of walking over a razor's edge, which most of us accepted as a challenge. As we complete one year of existence, it is heartening to realise that 'Varthakalkku Pinnil' had carved a space for itself in the cacophony of channel discussions in Kerala. As we move ahead, we welcome bouquets as well as brickbats! Its a living world, all are welcome to enrich our experience with your valauble comments!
